Takamatsu, in Kagawa Prefecture, is Japan's foremost producer of pine bonsai. Cultivated here for some two hundred years and refined through generations of ingenuity, Takamatsu bonsai now travel far beyond Japan, prized by enthusiasts around the world. The land itself is unforgiving: chronically short of water, scorched by sun, its sandy soil unsuited to farming. The craft and beauty of these trees are the expression of growers who endured that hardship — and they continue to be loved across borders and across eras.

In this series, I photographed Takamatsu bonsai together with the local landscapes that raised them. Behind Kinashi and Kokubunji, the principal bonsai-growing districts, rises the mountain massif of Goshikidai — the "five-colored plateau," whose peaks of Crimson, Yellow, Blue, Black, and White are said to take their names from the five elements of ancient Chinese cosmology. A bonsai outlives a human life; it carries the bond between people and nature down from antiquity. Weaving in the region's lore and thought, these works attempt a fusion of two natures: nature as expressed by the people of a harsh land — the bonsai — and nature as it is.

松盆栽の生産で日本一を誇る、香川県高松市。この地で育てられる高松盆栽は、いまや世界中に輸出され、盆栽愛好家を魅了し続けています。その栽培は、先人のたゆまぬ創意工夫により、およそ二百年にわたって受け継がれてきました。この土地は昔から深刻な水不足に悩まされ、日照りが多く、砂地のため農作物には不向きな土壌です。環境の過酷さに耐え忍ぶ生産者の熱意が生んだ技と美は、国境や時代を超えて人々に愛され続けています。

本シリーズでは、高松盆栽をモチーフに、地元の自然や風景を配した作品を制作しました。主な生産地区である鬼無町・国分寺町の遠景には、雄大な山並みの「五色台」がそびえています。紅ノ峰・黄ノ峰・青峰・黒峰・白峰山が連なるこの山塊の名は、古代中国の陰陽五行説に由来するといわれます。人の一生を超えて生き続ける盆栽は、古代から続く人と自然との関わりを想起させます。地域のいわれや思想を織り交ぜながら、厳しい大地から恵みを受けた人々が表現する自然の姿（盆栽）と、自然そのものの姿との融合を試みた作品群です。

About the title

Megumi (恵み) is the Japanese word for blessing — the grace a hard land nonetheless bestows on those who tend it.

「めぐみ（恵み）」は、厳しい土地がそれでも人に与えてくれるもの——その恩寵を意味します。
